OAESV Advocacy Day 2021

April 20, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

OAESV Advocacy Day 2021 – Embrace Your Voice, Tell Your Story

Since 2013, OAESV’s Annual Advocacy Day to End Sexual Violence has provided advocates, survivors, and interested members of the public with the opportunity to express the importance of sexual violence advocacy and prevention to members of the Ohio Legislature. After the main event, the one-on-one meetings with lawmakers provide invaluable opportunities for rape crisis professionals to share insight on pending legislation and make informed requests for funding increases. It is simply the best opportunity to have our voices heard in the place where laws are made!

ASL Interpreters and English Captions will be provided.

Senator Antonio, the Assistant Minority Leader, is honored to be serving her first term in the Ohio Senate after four terms in the Ohio House. She is a dedicated champion of workers’ rights, high-quality education, local governments, equal rights for women and the LGBTQ+ community, health care for all, and fighting the opioid crisis. Antonio is the Ranking Member on the Health and Transportation committees and sits on the Finance, Higher Education and Workforce, and Ways and Means committees. The first in her family to graduate from college, Antonio holds a bachelor’s degree in Education from Cleveland State University and a Master of Public Administration from the Maxine Levin College of Urban Affairs at CSU. She and her wife live in Lakewood and are the proud parents of two daughters.

Senator Matt Dolan is serving his second term in the Ohio Senate, representing Cuyahoga County – home to the largest rape crisis program in the United States. Senator Dolan is Chair of the Ohio Senate Finance Committee. Prior to joining the legislature, Senator Dolan was active in the community, where he served on several boards, including the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, LifeAct, the Rio Grande University Board of Trustees, and Cleveland Sports Charities. He also sat on the Case Western Reserve University Advisory Committee and the Cleveland Foodbank Strategic Planning Committee. He is currently a member of the Cleveland City Club and the Cleveland Council on World Affairs.

A graduate of Cleveland Heights’ Beaumont School, Juanita Brent always knew she wanted to serve the communities she calls home. As a member of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Women’s Caucus and a

former member of the board of trustees for the Health Care Service Corporation, the largest customer-owned health insurer in the country, Brent knows how important it is to provide women and families with access to affordable, quality health care. Prior to holding elected office, Brent also worked as a field director for the Ohio Democratic Party and founded Social Society Cleveland, a nonprofit professional networking organization. She currently sits on the board of the Harvard Community Services Center’s Lee-Harvard Community Development Center and is eager to bring her experience building and organizing strong communities to Columbus.

As the first black female mayor of Toledo, State Rep. Paula Hicks Hudson has always exhibited a commitment to empowering and helping people improve their quality of life. She currently represents Ohio’s 44th House District, which includes central Toledo. Rep. Hudson’s purpose has centered on improving the quality of her community through her hard work in the public and private sectors. During her 35-year professional career, she has worked as an assistant Lucas County prosecutor, assistant public defender, and assistant state attorney general. From 1998-2002, she served as the legislative director of the Toledo City Council. Following that, she served as the director and deputy director of the Lucas County Board of Elections and chief legal counsel to the Ohio Office of Budget and Management under Governor Ted Strickland. Rep. She is also the past president of the Thurgood Marshall law Association and the Toledo Women’s Bar Association.

Congressman David Joyce has represented Ohio’s 14th Congressional District since 2012. Serving House District 31, Rep. Brigid Kelly focuses on issues impacting children and families, including investing in local schools, supporting paid sick and family leave, creating and sustaining good wages and affordable health benefits, and maintaining worker safety. In the 133rd and 134th General Assemblies, Rep. Kelly has worked with Rep. Lipps to introduce Erin’s Law, House Bill 321. One of OAESV’s top legislative priorities, Erin’s Law would require age-appropriate sexual abuse prevention education in Ohio schools. This year, Rep. Kelly introduced House Bill 55, which would allow virtual testimony, enabling increased access to participation in the legislative process.

Congressman Anthony Gonzalez represents Ohio’s 16th District. This year, he co-sponsored VOCA Fix legislation critical to sustaining Ohio sexual violence services.

State Senator Teresa Fedor is a Democratic member of the Ohio Senate, representing the 11th District.  She returns to the Senate, where she previously served from 2002-2010, following eight years as the Ohio Representative for the 45th and 47th House Districts.
